Italics or not?
[edit]Are "capocollo", "panna cotta", "parmigiana, "penne rigate", "peperoncino", tortelli" and "tortelloni" common in the English language? Should it be written in italics or not? JackkBrown (talk) 14:23, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
- Why don't you look them up in an English dictionary? Here's one: [1]. Bazza (talk) 16:32, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
Remember WP:NOTDIRECTORY
[edit]This page probably breaks WP:NOTDIRECTORY, being an indiscriminate list of the names of just about anything anybody has every cooked or cooked with in Italy. We have WP:CATEGORIES for collating items which have their own article, so what is the purpose of this list article? Bazza (talk) 16:41, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Bazza 7: this page is very very useful for expanding the various pages of Italian regional cuisines (some foods were never mentioned by the British and Americans). JackkBrown (talk) 17:05, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
- That's not what list articles are for. Currently, the article is just an ever-growing exhausting list of mostly unverified Italian names, and I don't see what value it adds to Wikipedia. Bazza (talk) 18:18, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
- In my opinion we should identify the encyclopedic dishes, and link them, if they do not have the article on Wikipedia in English, with the {{ill}} template. Non-encyclopedic dishes should therefore be removed. --LukeWiller (talk) 18:27, 28 December 2023 (UTC).
- @LukeWiller I concur, this is quite lengthy so generally dishes without articles should be trimmed. Maybe keep some if they can be linked to an Italian Wikipedia article. This is especially true for topics with subarticles. We don't need the names of every pasta shape or every cheese here. Just because something is a recipe with a name doesn't mean it has to be here or else this gets indisciminate. Many items are duplicated between food type and the regional dishes, but perhaps some of those should be move to pages like Lombard cuisine if they aren't emblematic of Italian cuisine. The Herbs and spices list is pretty generic! Reywas92Talk 20:30, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Reywas92 Yes, in broad terms I agree with you: the article has too many dishes that are not encyclopedic, and we need to do some tidying up. I would only keep the dishes that have an article on Wikipedia in English or, if they don't have one, the dishes that have an article on Wikipedia in Italian using the {{ill}} template. Personally, I would eliminate the chapters on regional dishes (here the topic is Italian cuisine), keeping only the dishes of Italian national importance (which should be moved, if not already present as you rightly pointed out, to the relevant chapter to which they belong). The chapters on herbs and spices should also be eliminated, as they are off-topic, given that the article deals with food and dishes, not ingredients. --LukeWiller (talk) 22:27, 18 April 2024 (UTC).

The "Wines" paragraph should be expanded (in the meantime I added "Vin Santo"). JackkBrown (talk) 12:16, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
- How is a wine a "dish"? Bazza 7 (talk) 12:47, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Bazza 7: the paragraph was already there, I didn't add it. In any case, I wrote "and drinks" in the title of the main paragraph (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_Italian_dishes&diff=prev&oldid=1213512901). Thank you for noticing. JackkBrown (talk) 14:23, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
This page contains, for example, both "biscuit" (British English) and "cookie" (American English). The Jack (talk) 12:47, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

Resolved
Not randomly
[edit]@Reywas92: if you want to delete some images, you shouldn't do so at random, but think carefully about which ones to delete and which not; if you have already done so, congratulations. JacktheBrown (talk) 22:20, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
I have restored three images and removed three: the number of images is the same as before, so if I will be reverted it's bad faith. JacktheBrown (talk) 22:58, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
- Wow, failing to WP:AGF before anything happened? Of course I didn't remove them at random, I removed those that were duplicative or poorly illustrative. The same piadina image and the same pasta alla norma image were literally used twice, and the article doesn't need 13 images of pasta shapes, two of margherita pizza, two of vineyards, four of wine bottles, etc. I removed the one you restored of Frittelle because it had a logo in the corner but whatever. I'd say keep removing more. Reywas92Talk 15:18, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Reywas92: before removing others, we need to reach a consensus. I and LukeWiller are the main contributors to this page, so check with us first. JacktheBrown (talk) 15:21, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- LOL you don't WP:OWN the page! I'll let you take the next stab but 119 left is a lot that make the page less readable on mobile Reywas92Talk 15:27, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Reywas92: let's all three try to reach a consensus first, otherwise there will be useless edit wars; that's the point, I'm aware that I don't own any pages. JacktheBrown (talk) 15:31, 19 April 2024 (UTC)

- @Reywas92: thank you for removing the images that weren't good enough, you only made three mistakes, but otherwise you did a GOOD job. JacktheBrown (talk) 15:27, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- Mistakes? You just had a difference in opinion to prefer farfalle over fusili, get out of here. You just made a mistake of adding back the pecorino image when there's already one of pecorino in the Ingredients section as well as pictures of asiago and parmigiano (and a second of parmesan under Ingredients). Why does this need so many pictures of similar-looking hard cheeses? Reywas92Talk 16:06, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Reywas92: attention, "get out of here" is a personal attack or, in any case, a rude phrase. JacktheBrown (talk) 16:19, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- No it's not. You should get out of here with the idea that my removals of redundant images and an image with a logo were mistakes. Reywas92Talk 16:24, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
