[edit]Please replace Balkans with Carpathians in the first sentence: Moldova, officially the Republic of Moldova, is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, on the northeastern corner of the Balkans.
The Balkan Mountains are located south of the Carpathian Mountains. The Balkans are not in the vicinity of Moldova. I believe the author meant to speak about the Carpathians instead of the Balkans. The intended description of Moldova located "on the northeastern corner of the Carpathians" is correct. Sebpop (talk) 02:52, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- As I parse it, though I'm not particularly familiar with relevant editorial decisions, "the Balkans" refers primarily to the countries and the geographical area, not the mountain range. Indeed, the article you link on "The Balkans" shows Moldova just slightly northeast of the region defined as the Balkans. Quoting the article, "Although they have no territory on the peninsula, Hungary and Moldova are sometimes incorporated into the Balkans region due to cultural and historical affiliations." I don't think this edit should be made. Keller Scholl (talk) 13:53, 28 February 2025 (UTC)
"...on the northeast corner of the Balkans"? No. "The Carpathians", perhaps.
[edit]The first sentence of the lede states "Moldova, officially the Republic of Moldova, is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, on the northeastern corner of the Balkans" (emphasis added). This is a peculiar claim, first because "the Balkan states" generally refers to Bulgaria and the nations on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea (Serbia, Kosovo, North Macedonia, etc.), which Moldova is nowhere near. But there is, in fact another mountain range that lies between the Baltic Mountains and Moldova: the Carpathians. So to describe Moldova as being "on the northeast corner of the Balkans" is to dismiss the fact that there are at least 150 miles/240km of plains, plus the Carpathian Range, between the Baltic Range and the closest point of Moldova (although there is still 50 miles/80km between the Carpathians and the closest part of Moldova, so "on the corner" is a stretch). If no one can argue persuasively why this should not be changed, I will correct it.

Etymology section - German name of Moldova River is incorrect
[edit]The etymology section notes that the German name for the Moldova River is Moldau. Moldau is the German name for the Vltava River in Czechia. The German for Moldova is Moldova. See the Deutches article on the Moldova River: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moldova_(Fluss). The article is protected beyond my edit level. Is anyone with higher access motivated to correct this small thing? Catercorn (talk) 22:47, 10 December 2024 (UTC)

Saigas are not currently considered critically endangered, only near-threatened (https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/19832/233712210). Therefore the wording in the biodiversity section should be changed to reflect that. In particular the following changes should be made:
Change "Saigas are a critically endangered species that is now extinct in Moldova." to "Saigas are a near-threatened species that is now extinct in Moldova." in the image caption.
Change "[...] eradicated the native saiga herds which is currently threatened with extinction." to "[...] eradicated the native saiga herds." QuarksAndElectrons (talk) 18:33, 22 February 2025 (UTC)

[edit]"A referendum on joining the EU is planned for autumn 2024, there will be no voting stations in Transnistria, however residents there will be free to travel into other areas of Moldova to vote, should they wish to." This is incorrectly in the future tense, and should ideally be replaced with a citation about what happened for Transnistrian residents. Keller Scholl (talk) 13:55, 28 February 2025 (UTC)
